Hockey player Jyoti Gupta was found dead on a railway track in Rewari, Haryana, late on 3 August. The 20-year-old has represented the women’s national hockey team and was a rising star.
Gupta’s death is being viewed as suicide. She “suddenly appeared” on the tracks before the Chandigarh-Jaipur Intercity Express train, police quoted the driver of the train as saying, Times of India reported.
The driver informed the Government Railway Police (GRP) that Gupta had appeared in front of the train at around 8:30 pm, when it was crossing the Jhajjar Road overbridge, near Rewari station.
Upon receiving a call from the train driver, the GRP reached the site of the accident. Ranveer Singh, HO, GRP Rewari told TOI:
He said he tried to pull the brakes but the girl came in front of the train before it could be stopped.
Sources told TOI that Gupta had last spoken to her Sonepat-based family at around 7 pm on 3 August, informing them that she would be late as her bus had broken down. At around 10:30 pm, Gupta’s mother called her phone only to be told by the GRP official that her daughter was no more.
Gupta was a striker in the hockey team and had recently attended a three-month-long national training camp at Shilaroo, Himachal Pradesh, ahead of July’s World Hockey League Semifinals in Johannesburg. According to reports, Gupta was also scheduled to join another camp later this month.
