Jagannath Rath Yatra Claims 23 Lives and Leaves Twelve Injured

Two women lost their lives and twelve other’s were injured in a stampede in the ongoing Jagannath rath yatra.

In another incident, in less than 24 hours, a 28-year-old man was allegedly crushed to death under the wheels of Sri Jagannath’s chariot at Lanjipalli in Odisha’s Behrampur district, police said today.

The man, identified as G Jagannath Reddy of Laxmi Nagar in Lanjipalli area in the town, was immediately taken to MKCG Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared him as brought dead, police said.

Senior police officers, including SP (Berhampur) Sarthak Sarangi, rushed to the spot. The incident did not affect pulling of the chariot, the SP said.

In yet another incident, a 59-year-old pilgrim lost his life due to a cardiac arrest.

Mahesh Prasad of Uttar Pradesh had a cardiac arrest at Sonamarg, around 85 Km from Srinagar.
