Ruchi Verma’s life took a drastic turn when her husband Major Vineet Verma was martyred during a counter-insurgency operation in Assam. Not one to take things lying down, she decided to fill his boots and two years later she left the Officer’s Training Academy, a battle-ready army officer.

It has been a tough journey for Lt. Ruchi Verma. In the past two years she has lost 13 kgs. She has chopped off her long black hair and now sports a crew cut. But the toughest part has been to leave her son behind. Akshat was just three when he lost his father, and now lives with his grandparents, cheering his mother as she marches on for his sake.

On International Widows Day, watch her first video interview where she talks about how she picked herself up after the life changing loss of her husband, and her dreams for her son.
