In a first, the Indian Navy might soon get women sailors, with their induction in the non-officer cadre figuring on the agenda of a three-day high-level navy conference that concluded on Friday, 2 November, Hindustan Times reported.
Currently, women only hold the officer ranks in the navy.
According to the report, deployment of women on warships is also being considered with Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urging the navy to speed up the enrolment process.
The Indian Army is also mulling on the induction of women in the non-officer cadre, the report said, adding that a plan to recruit 800 women in the military police is also being worked on.
