1. Naxals Kill MLA, Ex-Lawmaker in Andhra; Women Part of Hit Squad

A group of Naxals, including many women, shot dead a legislator and a former lawmaker in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday in first such Naxal attack in nearly five years in the state.

Telugu Desam Party MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao, 45, and his party colleague Siveri Soma, 52, were targeted on their way to participate in a village tour in the interior Dumbriguda Mandal, said the police. The scene of the killings is close to Araku, a popular hill station.

2. Woman Arrested in Delhi for Running Child-Selling Racket

A 40-year-old woman has been arrested from south Delhi for allegedly running a racket selling children, police said on Sunday, 23 September.

The woman, Kavita, is suspected to be the kingpin of the racket selling babies to childless couples at prices ranging between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, they said.

The accused was held three days ago and a court has sent her to police remand, police said, adding two babies have been recovered after her arrest.

3. Former Mayor Samir Kumar, Driver Shot Dead by Unidentified Men in Muzaffarpur

Former Muzaffarpur mayor Samir Kumar and his driver were shot dead by a group of unidentified assailants near Banaras Bank Chowk in Bihar on Sunday, 23 September, news agency ANI reported.

Police suspect nearly 17-18 rounds were fired at the deceased with an AK-47 assault rifle. Six cartridges were recovered from the spot.

According to IANS, police said the criminals stopped the former mayor’s vehicle, fired dozens of bullets at the duo and fled.

A case has been registered in this regard.

4. Father Held for ‘Recalling’ Rape Complaint

The father of a sixth-grade student, who had registered a case alleging his daughter had been molested by her school headmaster, has been arrested by Gurgaon police along with five others for extorting money from the accused’s family in return for recalling his complaint and settling the case.

Police said the father had registered a complaint against the headmaster on Friday, following which he was arrested.

“On Saturday, however, ACP Crime Against Women (South), received a tip-off claiming the father had entered into a settlement with the accused for a large amount. Soon after, the father turned around from his complaint and recorded a statement in favour of the accused before the magistrate,” said Subhash Boken, PRO, Gurgaon police.

5. Woman Held for Trafficking Minor Girls From Jharkhand to Work as Domestic Help

Delhi Police have arrested a 37-year-old woman for allegedly trafficking minor girls to the capital from Jharkhand, and placing them as domestic help at various households.

According to the Jharkhand police, the accused, Prabha Muni, is alleged to be high up in the human trafficking ring operating in eastern India’s Chota Nagpur belt and had recently extended operations to Santal Pargana — the tribal belt region.

Police claimed that Muni and her husband Rohit Kumar have been active for over a decade. “They set up their own placement agency and lured girls from the tribal belt with the promise of jobs, only to set them up in several households with below minimum wages and not transferring the money to their parents,” said a police officer, adding that she has trafficked girls between the ages of 13-14 years.

6. BJP Leader From West Bengal Booked for Asking People to ‘Retaliate to Police Action’

Police on Sunday, 23 September arrested BJP North Dinajpur district president Shankar Chakraborty from Domohana area here for making provocative comments against security forces.

Chakraborty was held while he was on his way to Raiganj from Islampur, DM Arvind Kumar Meena said.

The BJP leader, while addressing villagers earlier in the day, asked them to take action against security forces in North Dinajpur, where two students died in a clash with police over teachers’ recruitment in a high school.

7. Man Beaten to Death Over Suspicion of Theft

An unidentified man was lynched by a mob in Banaskantha district of Gujarat on the suspicion that he was a thief, police said Sunday, 23 September.

The incident took place at Harigadh village in Danta teshil on Saturday night, following which six persons were arrested Sunday, said sub-inspector B K Goswami.

An unidentified man, aged around 50, allegedly entered the house of Amrat Prajapati on Saturday night, he said.

Members of the Prajapati family claimed that they woke up sensing that there was an intruder and caught the man, the police officer said.

8. Youth Stabbed During Ganesh Idol Immersion Procession in Surat

Tension erupted in Sayan of Surat district on Sunday, 23 September, when a 21-year-old was stabbed to death and five others were injured by a car driver who attacked a group of youths who were on their way to immerse Ganesh idols.

According to the police, members of Ganesh Mandal had taken out a procession for Ganesh idol immersion when a car from behind kept honking. When some of the youths went to the car driver, identified as 26-year-old Chaitanya Rawal, the latter alighted from his car and stabbed six of them. He was caught by the crowd and handed over to the police. However, later the members of the Mandal gheraoed police outpost and demanded that the accused be handed over to them. As the mob got violent and set the car on fire, police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob.

9. 19-Year-Old Man Held Hostage, Robbed by Five Men in Gurugram

A 19-year-old man, working as a promoter at a mobile phone manufacturing company in Sector 31, alleged that he was robbed at gunpoint by five men, who offered him a lift, said the police on Sunday.

The man alleged that the accused forced him to call his relative and transfer money, before robbing and leaving him in a village in Nuh, several hours after he got into the cab.

According to the police, the incident took place on Friday night around 9 pm, when the victim, identified as Mehant Rajput, boarded an auto rickshaw after work for Badshahpur.
