1. Junaid Lynching: HC Stays Trial Proceedings

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday stayed the trial court proceedings in the alleged lynching of 17-year-old Junaid Khan, who was stabbed to death on a train in June, said Arshdeep Singh Cheema, the counsel for Khan's father Jalaluddin.

A Division bench of the high court also issued a notice of motion to the Haryana government and the CBI on his family's plea seeking a probe by the central agency into the matter.

Khan, who had boarded a Mathura-bound train from Delhi, was allegedly stabbed to death when he, along with his brothers and cousins, was returning home to Khandawali village after shopping for Eid in Delhi in June.

His body was dumped near Asaoti village in Faridabad district.

2. Child Abuse: Police Summon Principal After Victim Named by Kolkata School

Kolkata Police, on Tuesday, summoned the principal of GD Birla Centre for Education in connection with the probe into the alleged sexual abuse of a 4-year-old student in the school by two male teachers.

A worker engaged in cleaning work and two other non-teaching staff members were also summoned for questioning, a senior Kolkata Police official said.

Principal Sharmila Nath, meanwhile, courted controversy by allegedly revealing the name of the victim girl in letters to guardians, violating the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

The principal, in a letter sent on Monday to around 4,000 guardians assuring safety of their wards in the school, had mentioned the name of the girl.

3. Three Arrested After Charred Body Found in Guwahati

The charred body of a college girl was found in the bathroom of her classmate's house in Guwahati and three members of the family were arrested in connection with it, police said on Tuesday.

She was found on Tuesday evening and was rushed to a hospital, which declared her dead, Additional Deputy Commissioner (West) of Guwahati Police Amitabh Basumatary said.

The girl was identified as a fifth semester student of KC Das Commerce College and a resident of Paltan Bazar. She was found in the bathroom of the house of her classmate in Shantipur area, he said.

"After preliminary investigation, we have arrested the friend, his mother and sister for their suspected role in the possible murder," Basumatary said.

4. MP Court Issues Warrant Against Minister in Murder Case

A court in Bhind, on Tuesday, issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Madhya Pradesh minister Lal Singh Arya, an accused in the murder of a Congress MLA in 2009.

The development comes a fortnight after the Gwalior bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court turned down Arya's anticipatory bail plea.

On 8 August, the special judge had issued a bailable warrant against Arya in connection with the murder of Congress MLA from Gohad Makhanlal Jatav.

Jatav was shot dead by unidentified persons on 13 April 2009 during the general elections. Arya was later booked as an accused, besides others.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Ajay Singh demanded Arya’s immediate resignation.

5. Navi Mumbai Bank Heist: Woman Among 11 Arrested

Navi Mumbai police have arrested 11 persons, including a woman, in connection with the alleged robbery at Juinagar branch of Bank of Baroda, in which the accused had allegedly entered by digging a tunnel and decamped with valuables worth Rs 3.43 crore by breaking open 30 lockers, a top police official said on Tuesday.

While eight of the accused were arrested from Mumbai, two others were held from Panchla in West Bengal and Allahabad. A jeweller, whom the accused sold the stolen valuables, was arrested from Malegaon in Nashik.

Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale said in a press conference that the police have so far recovered stolen valuables worth Rs 1.51 crore, which include gold jewellery weighing 5.5 kg, silver jewellery of 412 grams and cash worth Rs 12.19 lakh. Four cars collectively worth Rs 24 lakh were also seized from them.

6. Man Arrested For Allegedly Flinging Son to Death

A man allegedly flung his one-and-a-half year old son to death after a tiff with his wife in Mandsaur, MP, a police official said on Tuesday.

The man, identified as Raju Banjara (35), has been arrested, he said.

Banjara was cooking food in his house at Bhagwanpura village when he and his wife got in an argument, Bhanpura police station in-charge Gopal Chouhan said.

The tiff between the husband and wife was over the accused aspersions on his wife’s “character” and “over her standing outside the house at night”, he said.

Later in a fit of anger, the man flung his son, causing the toddler's death on the spot, Chouhan said.

The accused was subsequently arrested and booked under IPC section 302 (murder), police added.

7. Teenage Girl Found Dead in Pune, Police Suspect Sexual Assault

A partly clad body of a 17-year-old girl with her head smashed was found on the outskirts of Chakan town in Pune, police said on Tuesday.

He said when the girl's mother returned to their home in the evening she found her daughter missing.

"The family members of the girl and villagers searched for her in the vicinity and near the farms, but couldn't trace her. Subsequently, they approached police and lodged a missing and kidnapping complaint," the police inspector said.

Yadav said it was the brother of the girl who spotted her body lying near their own farm.

"The deceased was semi-naked and her head was found smashed with a heavy stone while her tongue was stuck between her teeth," said Yadav.

8. Drunk Youth Rams SUV Into Parked Car, Kills Friend

A youngster allegedly killed his friend and injured two others after ramming his SUV into a parked car on Road No 45 at Hyderabad’s Jubilee Hills on Monday.

The accused, who was allegedly drunk, was identified as K Karthik, student of Satyabhama Engineering College in Chennai, and the deceased, his friend, M Jatin Varma 21, a resident of Gachibowli studying in GITAM engineering college, Patancheru.

The incident occurred at 12:15 am, early Monday morning when Karthik, along with his friends M Jatin Varma, Rohan and Nikhil, was driving towards Jubilee Hills from Park Hyatt hotel in Banjara Hills, after attending an event.

Karthik was reportedly drunk driving at a high speed and failed to notice the parked car on the left side of the road and hit the car from behind, which led to the car overturning multiple times.

9. Three Arrested for Alleged Involvement in Killing of NRI

Three men have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the killing of an NRI in Delhi's New Friends Colony in July, police said on Tuesday.

On 5 July, Hemant Chawla was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his friend's house, they said.

Chawla had returned to India from the US last year to look after his mother. On the morning of 5 July, his friend Nitin Sabharwal informed his driver that his employer had died, according to police.

Five months after his death, the Crime Branch arrested two men in connection with the case, the police said.

A third man, Chawla's friend, in whose house his body was found, was also arrested, police said.

The family claimed that there was foul play and on July 19 the police registered a murder case.
