1. Uttarakhand Minor Gang-Raped, Killed; 2 Suspects Arrested

A 10-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped and murdered by two men in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district, police said on Wednesday, 7 August. The two men, who work as labourers, were arrested.

The girl, a class 5 student, went missing on Monday evening from Kotdwar town of the district. Her family lodged a complaint with police on Tuesday after failing to trace her, an officer said.

2. Couple Chopped into Pieces, Another Gagged and Strangled in Kolkata

Two double murders of couples sent shockwaves across Kolkata after the bodies were discovered on Tuesday.

Police said the bodies of senior citizens Dilip Mukherjee (80) and Swapna Mukherjee (72) were found in their two-storey house in the middle-class neighbourhood of Netaji Nagar in south Kolkata, while those of Pradip Biswas (55) and Alpana Biswas (47) were found chopped and stuffed in two trolley bags inside the toilet of a farmhouse where they used to live as caretakers in Narendrapur in the southern fringes of the city.

3. Custodial Death of Rape Accused: 2 Doctors Testify That Deceased Had No Injury Marks before Arrest

The special CBI Court of Chandigarh on Wednesday dismissed an application by three people – accused in a custodial death case of a rape accused – seeking to be transferred from a Chandigarh prison to a Shimla jail.

Suraj Singh – accused of gangraping a minor girl in Kotkhai in May 2017 — was found dead at Kotkhai police station on 18 July 2017. Nine people were later booked in connection with the case by Kotkhai police.

4. Chandigarh: Speeding Jeep Runs over 21-Year-Old Student Walking on Zebra Crossing

A 21-year-old student was run over by a speeding Thar jeep while walking on zebra crossing on Sector 21/34 dividing road on Tuesday. The victim was identified as Akshita Abrol, a resident of Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir. She was accompanied by her friend Renu Sharma, who had a narrow escape. The incident happened around 11 am.

The Thar jeep bearing Haryana registration number was being driven by a BCom student of SD College, Sector 32, Nihar Kaur, 21. She is a resident of Sector 10. She was arrested and later released on bail. Police said Nihar failed to produce any driving licence when she was arrested. Her family members will produce the licence on Wednesday.

5. Man Beaten up by Sons in Lucknow, Succumbs to Injuries

A 50-year-old man succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, a day after he was beaten up by his two sons who were in an inebriated condition.

The victim had snubbed his two sons for consuming liquor, after which they allegedly attacked him with wooden sticks, said locals.

The accused duo was missing since the incident, said police.

6. Mentally Ill Woman Branded as 'Child-Lifter,' Thrashed by Youths

A 60-year-old mentally challenged woman was dragged and thrashed by a group of youngsters on the road at a village in Agra district on Wednesday after suspecting her to be a child lifter.

A video of the incident is being widely circulated on social media. The incident took place around 8 am at Bada Gaon near Gandhi Nagar chowk of Shamshabad police limits in Agra district.

7. Brothers Create Fake Firms to Dupe Banks of Rs 2 Crore

In 2006, 38-year-old Manoj Thakur moved to Delhi, and between 2014 and 2019, set up three data firms with his brothers Sanjay Thakur (27) and Animesh Thakur (25). These firms had more than 40 employees on their rolls and took loans from ICICI Bank, Citibank and some others.

Apart from the money, they borrowed from these banks, everything was fake.

8. Accused of Killing 18-Year-Old, Man Escapes From Ghaziabad Court

An undertrial accused of killing his 18-year-old sister-in-law escaped after giving Ghaziabad Police the slip from the District Court prior to his hearing Wednesday. A constable posted in Police Lines has been arrested in connection with the audacious escape.

“Naushad was due to be presented in the court for a hearing in the case pending against him for the murder of his relative in 2016. The constable allowed him outside the premises without informing his seniors. He has been arrested for negligence in duty and allowing the prisoner to escape. Three teams have been formed to hunt for the accused,” said Shloka Kumar, SP City (Ghaziabad).

9. STF Nabs Four in Noida for Bank Fraud

Four persons were arrested by the Noida unit of the Special Task Force on Wednesday for allegedly duping private banks on the pretext of taking loans. The police also recovered ₹60,000 in Nepali currency from them.

According to the police, they received a complaint earlier this year from a private bank which stated that the suspects had received loans by opening accounts in the name of non-existent technology companies. Based on the complaint, a probe in the matter was ordered.
