In a bid to escape all the confusion over animal sacrifice, Muslim organisations on Tuesday requested the Telangana DGP Anurag Sharma to make proper arrangements for procuring animals for the upcoming Bakrid festival.
The organisations have requested the State animal husbandry departments to provide animals for sale, in order to avoid any confusion or casualties later. The animals that can be used for sacrifice include oxen, sheep and buffaloes.
Such a move, if implemented, will reduce pressure on police too, who have been dealing with cases of violence between right-wing groups and cattle traders over illegal cow transportation and slaughter lately.
Measures Being Taken to Avoid Mishaps
Deputy Commissioner of Police, South Zone, Hyderabad, V Satyanarayana told Times of India that awareness camps were being held to prevent cow slaughter and strict action will be taken against transgressors.
He also said that cow and calf slaughter is completely prohibited. This apart, a veterinary doctor has been assigned with each Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) to further strengthen security measures.
A senior police official, while talking to The Hindu, added that the cattle to be slaughtered should not be underage i.e below three years of age. In addition, it should have a certificate from the Animal Husbandry department deeming it fit for slaughter. Overloading of cattle in a truck also qualifies as an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Cattle traders, on the other hand, raised concerns over the difficulty of getting cattle in the city from outskirts and other districts. They have urged co-operation in this regard.
