A day after pulling up the Centre on its handling of the drought crisis, the Supreme Court has now rebuked both the Centre and states for their delayed implementation of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and ordered that every household in the drought-hit region be provided with heavily subsidised food grains and mid-day meal schemes, reports Livemint.
The court also put the onus of drought relief squarely on the Centre. “The Centre cannot hide behind the smokescreen of lack of funds,” justice Madan B Lokur said.
In other directions, the court ordered states to extend the mid-day meal scheme for school children during the summer vacation and the Centre to immediately approve it; eggs or milk must be provided at least three days a week to school children.
