Govt Asks Police to Lodge FIR in JNU Dalit Student’s Death

The government has directed the Delhi Police to urgently file an FIR in the suicide of JNU scholar Muthu Krishnan, Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told the Rajya Sabha on 15 March after several opposition members raised the issue of discrimination on campuses.

Sitharaman also said she had met family members and friends of the deceased student and the government was considering his father's request to provide his sisters with jobs.

“What is happening in the central universities of the country?” A Dalit student from Tamil Nadu had died in pathetic and "mysterious" circumstances, CPI leader D Raja said during Zero Hour. He also drew parallels to the suicide of Hyderabad University Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula.

Muthukrishnan’s Father Suspects Foul Play, Demands Probe

A day after the death of JNU scholar J Muthukrishanan, his father and their relatives reached AIIMS on Tuesday. The family refused to accept the body and demanded that a probe be conducted into his death.

Jeevanatham, Muthukrishanan’s father told The Times of India that his son could not have committed suicide. He said that he had spoken to him a few days ago and he had promised to visit them. The father suspects foul play and wants an independent committee to investigate the case.

On Wednesday morning, the Delhi Police had filed an FIR for abetment to suicide in the case of the JNU student.

According to The News Minute, Muthukkrishnan’s father wants a full scale post-mortem to be conducted by doctors of his choosing. He has also asked that the process be videotaped and the report be sent to the CBI to ensure its authenticity. These demands were not accepted by either the police of AIIMS.
