Fresh data has revealed that India lost over 40 tigers between January and August 9 this year. The causes of death including poaching, natural causes and several cases of authorities shooting the tigers due to man-animal conflict. Even as we celebrate the findings from World Tiger Day last week, the data reminds us that Indian tiger conservation still has a long way to go.
Each year, we exhaust a year’s worth of natural resources just a little bit sooner and this year, Global Overshoot Day arrived on August 13. This marks “the day each year when our demands on the planet outstrip its ability to regenerate”. India’s position is worrying – while we have a low per capita ecological footprint, we’re also exhausting our resources at an alarming rate.

The Delhi government has decided to impose the NGT mandated environment cess on all households in the national capital. In May, the NGT had ordered that all sewage producing households should pay environmental compensation. The Delhi government has also announced several other measures to combat air pollution in the city.

To help improve water quality and prevent evaporation, tranches of 96m black plastic shade balls have been released into the Los Angeles reservoir at Sylmar. The idea is to prevent the contamination of reservoir from bromate with these low-cost balls.
