The name of a little town in coastal Karnataka trended on Twitter for a while on Tuesday, thanks to a National Geographic show that was to be telecast in the evening.
Titled ‘India’s Megakitchens’, the show featured the Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Temple in Dharmasthala – a small town that is around 60 km from Mangaluru on the Karnataka coastline.
The channel released a trailer which was tweeted by users. The trailer featured the show’s host, Amritsar-born chef Vikas Khanna.

The temple in Dharmasthala is often referred to by the name of the place. “We’re going to Dharmasthala”, simply means the temple. The temple has been run by the powerful Heggade family, who are vegetarian Jains in an otherwise non-vegetarian society. The current Dharmadhikari of the Hindu temple is Veerendra Heggade.
The temple has recently been mired in controversy following the rape and death of a 17-year-old girl named Sowjanya, whose body was found on the temple premises.
