1. ‘Our Sewage Is Treated And Is Back In Our Taps’

The Colaba-Bandra Seepz Metro 3 project has not only displaced 182 families from their homes, but also the right to clean water. The erstwhile residents of Shanti Nagar in Sahar village, who have now been rehabilitated at Mulgaon in Andheri East, claim that the water they have been receiving in their taps is filthy.

Residents allege that sewage water from their toilets undergo some basic filtration treatment in the basement and the same water is diverted back into their taps for reuse. The end result is that the water is filthy and full of worms.
While the MMRC spokesperson claimed that the treated water was being reused only for toilet flushing purposes and was not meant for drinking, residents say that they get the same water in all taps. The drinking water is supplied through tankers.

Sunita Gavandi, a resident who discovered this sewage treatment in the basement, said, “I was shocked to see our toilet water being treated in the basement. I was told by the operator that it was sent back to our taps for reuse. We may be poor but must we be denied our basic right to clean water?”

Next time you drop in at The Bagel Shop in Bandra and ask for a straw to sip on your Kiwi Slush, you might just be directed to the poster on the wall. It simply asserts that the restaurant is participating in the #refusethestraw initiative. Launched a month ago, it shuns single-use straws with an aim to be more eco-friendly.

"We've stopped giving straws in our deliveries too. If a guest asks for a straw, our staff first suggests that we don't use them. But, if they still insist, we offer a paper straw that we stock from a regular supplier," says Anil Kably, owner of The Bagel Shop.

The Bagel Shop is not alone. There are other F&B establishments in the city that look set to join the 'No Straw' policy. The Little Door, a pub in Andheri, is planning to execute the campaign in 10 days' time.

Several cattle shed licensees in Aarey Milk Colony are set to lose part of their residential premises after they were unable to prove that they owned a minimum of 20 cattle in the City Civil Court.

These licensees had moved the City Civil Court after the state government’s Competent Authority had served them eviction orders for the rooms allotted to them by the state. According to a 1953 policy, one room could be allotted on a temporary license to a person holding 20 or more cattle.
Among the 70 residential quarters kept aside for cattle shed licensees inside Aarey, numerous residents have been served orders to vacate the allotted premises.
