The Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha was celebrating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse in Bhopal on Saturday, 19 May, when Congress workers intervened in the gathering, objecting to the celebration, the Hindustan Times reported.
The celebrations were being led by the Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha under the Veer Savarkar Setu at the RRL crossing in Bhopal. According to the HT report, they had decorated Godse’s portrait and were serving drinks to the pedestrians when a group of Congress workers, led by state youth Congress spokesperson Krishna Ghadge, reached the spot and protested the celebration.
The Congress workers raised slogans against Godse, saying that they will not allow the function that celebrates the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.
Police, upon reaching the spot, urged both sides to maintain harmony. However, after some time, Mahasabha activists reportedly removed the table, photo, etc from the spot and left.
Talking to the Hindustan Times, PK Tiwari of the Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha said that they were celebrating Godse’s birth anniversary in a peaceful manner and it was the Congress workers who created ruckus.
Ghadge on the other hand, told HT that they stopped the celebrations because it is an insult to Mahatma Gandhi and they will not allow such functions to take place in the state.
