Referring to the rising cases of mob lynching across the country, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Mishra on Tuesday, 24 July, urged people to not blatantly believe information doing the rounds on social media.

"Please don't misunderstand me because I have authored the judgment; there is a recent surge in mob lynching based on the viral text (shared) on social media and this leads to mobocracy and loss of life, in certain cases," he said, as quoted by ANI.
The Supreme Court had earlier directed the Parliament to frame a law against mob lynchings calling it “horrendous mobocracy”. It had said that mob lynchings cannot be allowed to become the “new normal”.
The Centre on Monday, 23 July, had said that it is committed to uphold the rule of law and adopt effective measures, ANI reported.
The Centre informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, 24 July, that it had constituted a high-level committee under Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba to deliberate and make recommendations for a separate penal provision on incidents of mob violence.
