1. Army and ITBP Officers Take Stock of Sikkim Border Showdown With China
Officials in the Union Home Ministry on Tuesday reviewed the situation along the Sino-Indian border following tension in the forward areas in Sikkim after a scuffle between personnel of the Indian Army and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The meeting, attended by representatives of the Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, besides the home ministry, took stock of the border, particularly in Sikkim, officials said.
Of the 3,488-km Sino-Indian border from Jammu and Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh, 220 km falls in Sikkim. The scuffle between the Indian Army and the PLA led to Chinese troops damaging bunkers on the Indian side.

2. Congress Calls Modi-Trump Meet Disappointing , Naidu Describes Oppn as Jealous
The Congress on Tuesday dubbed the outcome of PM Narendra Modi’s meeting with US President Donald Trump as “disappointing”, drawing sharp reactions from I&B minister Venkaiah Naidu who retorted that the Opposition party was jealous of its own “lost opportunities” in diplomacy.
This is borne out of sheer jealousy and guilt as Prime Minister’s every foreign visit holds mirror to the lost opportunities during the ten years of UPA rule.
Slamming the UPA-era foreign policy as “lacklustre,” Naidu said: “The growing status of the PM as a global leader and the rising status of India is not digestible to Congress given their lacklustre foreign policy.”

3. Those Who Lynched Junaid on Train Will be Punished, Says Haryana CM Khattar
Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar promised on Tuesday the killers of Junaid Khan, who was lynched on a train in Faridabad, will be brought to justice.
“The government will not allow anyone to take the law in his hands,” he said in an interview to Hindustan Times.
The 16-year-old Junaid was returning to his Ballabhgarh home with his brothers after Eid shopping in New Delhi on 23 June. He was stabbed to death by a mob after an altercation over seats on a suburban train. The attackers called him a “beef-eater” and “anti-national”.

4. 100 Days in Office: Yogi Says Committed to Making UP a Developed State
Expressing satisfaction with the work done by his government in first 100 days, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said he was committed to making Uttar Pradesh a developed state.
He also used the occasion to blame the non-BJP government for the state’s backwardness.

5. Cyberattack: India’s Largest Port Under Attack
Operations at one of the three terminals of the India's largest container port, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) were impacted as a fallout of the global ransomware attack.
AP Moller-Maersk, one of the affected entities globally, operates the Gateway Terminals India (GTI) at JNPT, which has a capacity to handle 1.8 million standard container units.
“We have been informed that the operations at GTI have come to a standstill because their systems are down (due to the malware attack). They are trying to work manually,” a senior JNPT official told PTI on Tuesday night.

6. Una Flogging of Dalits: 1 Year on, No Special Court to Hear Case, Says Govt Prosecutor
Nearly a year after then Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel had announced that a special court would be set up for speedy trial of the case of flogging of people from a Dalit family for allegedly skinning a dead cow, the special public prosecutor appointed by the government says that no such court has been set up yet.
Patel had made the announcement on 18 July 2016. Gujarat’s Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja, asked about the absence of such a court, said there is nothing amiss and pointed at the court presently hearing the matter.

7. BJP Distances Itself From VHP’s Demand Seeking Scrapping of Minority Panel
The BJP on Tuesday distanced itself from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)’s demand for immediate scrapping of the Minority Commission and Minority Affairs Ministry. It said that the party-led government at the Centre works on the basis of the “sabka saath sabka vikas’’ as promised in party’s 2014 manifesto.
“We are committed to work on the implementation of the manifesto. Our mandate for governance is derived from our manifesto,” BJP spokesman GVL Narasimha Rao said. He claimed that the previous governments had wrongly interpreted” the concept of minorities.

8. ‘Alliance Will continue, But Friendly Parties Pushing JD(U) Towards BJP’
The JD(U) has said that Bihar ruling Grand Alliance can continue till 2025 but “friendly parties” are pushing it to join hands with the BJP even though its support for the NDA’s presidential nominee, Ram Nath Kovind, is an isolated issue. The party targeted Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad for his remarks against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over supporting Kovind.

The JD(U)-RJD-Congress alliance, which is till 2020, will continue even till 2025 if mitra dal (friendly parties) want it. We have made it clear that our decision to support NDA’s presidential candidate is a one-time affair. I do not know why some friendly parties want to make it a permanent affair.

9. India Plays Ball on North Korea to Score Over Beijing
References to terrorism are par for the course in India-US statements, but President Donald Trump's comment appreciating India's support for American action against North Korea was less common.
The remark, however, may signal in part the success of Indian efforts to engage with an administration that is seen to be headed by a temperamental leader by offering support on an issue that is clearly on Trump's mind.
“I also thank the Indian people for their contributions to the effort in Afghanistan, and for joining us in applying new sanctions against the North Korean regime. The North Korean regime is causing tremendous problems and is something that has to be dealt with, and probably dealt with rapidly,” Trump said after meeting PM Narendra Modi.
