Air India tweaked its menu from mid-June to serve only vegetarian meals to economy class passengers on all its domestic flights as a cost-cutting measure that will save them around Rs 10 crore per annum. Plus, it wants to stop wastage. The shudh-shakahari diktat does not apply to business or executive class in both domestic and international flights.

The move obviously drew the ire of frequent flyers among others and then came its rival airline – Tata’s Air Vistara – with its tongue-in-cheek tweet of letting its passengers relish the food of their choice. Followed by an emoji, of course.

Vistara’s dig was also accompanied by the fluttered Twitterati, which unleashed its mixed response on AI’s call. While some predicted future alterations that the airline may make, other smelled something “political”.
