Eleven people, including two minors, died and around 50 people were injured after a bus turned turtle near Mirzapur-Ghoshpara area this morning in Burdwan district of West Bengal.
The incident took place around 9 o clock on Friday morning. At least 20 people were given first aid and 19 others with serious injuries have been admitted to the Burdwan Medical College.
Most of the passengers were pilgrims in the bus headed towards Nadia district.
According to locals, the bus was over speeding and turned turtle while taking a turn near Mirzapur. Those working in the nearby fields rushed to help the victims till the time police reached the spot.
“Our priority is to rescue all the injured and provide treatment. The reason behind the accident is subject to probe. We are on the spot and working towards rescuing people,” said the the District Magistrate.
The state government has declared compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased.
Four buses with pilgrims had left this morning from Khandagosh in Burdwan to Mayapuri in Nadia district.
