1. CM, Leaders Condole Vajpayee’s Death

Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Leader of Opposition M K Stalin and political party leaders paid rich tributes to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who died in New Delhi on Thursday, 16 August.

“A great son of Mother India is no more. But his service to the people of India as the Prime Minister of the nation, memories of his speeches in Parliament and outside, and his qualities of tolerance and magnanimity will live on forever,” the Governor said.

Palaniswami observed that Vajpayee was the first Prime Minister from the BJP, who became Prime Minister thrice, also served the country well as the External Affairs Minister and also as a Parliamentarian for over five decades.

2. Greater Chennai Corporation Wants Green-Signal on Waste Collection Fee

Greater Chennai Corporation has approached the state government to issue a government order allowing it to start charging user fees for municipal waste collection. This move comes even as the civic body is receiving feedback for the Draft Solid Waste Management Bye-Laws, 2016 it released in June. According to sources in the civic body, this draft, which was supposed to have been finalised by August has hit a roadblock and this move is a circumvention measure. It is learnt that the Chennai Corporation has asked the State government to pass the government order under section 353-A of Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919.

A few weeks ago, a woman approached the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women with a complaint that she was thrown out of her house by her husband and his family because she was a Dalit.

“They ran away and got married; however, post-marriage, his family, which belongs to a higher caste, began to harass her. Her husband too joined in. One day, the woman was thrown onto the streets,” said Kannagi Packianathan, IAS, Chairperson of the Commission.

In the last six months, since the Commission was revived after its former Chairperson Visalakshi Nedunchezhian passed away a year ago, hundreds of women across the State have petitioned it. Out of the 813 petitions the Commission has received so far, 22 relate to caste-based violence.

4. Chances of Floods in Chennai to Rise by 2050: Anna University's  L Elango

The rainfall in Chennai is likely to reduce by 5 percent by 2050. However, there will be an increased frequency of catastrophic rainfall, said professor L Elango from the Geology department of Anna University. Speaking at ‘Urban Ecology and Resilience’, a conference on climate change here on Thursday, he said, “We used the global climate change model, which studies the climate change pattern across the globe in grids of 25 sq km. We down-scaled it to study the grid in which Chennai fell to predict this pattern,” he said.

5. Govt Justifies Transfer of Idol Theft Cases to CBI

The State government on Thursday told the Madras High Court that it had issued an order on August 1 transferring all idol theft cases from the Idol Wing CID to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), not to divert the ongoing investigations as alleged by a PIL petitioner, but only to ensure a fair, independent and effective investigation.

In a counter affidavit filed before a Division Bench of Justices, R Mahadevan and P D Audikesavalu, the government said, it had an obligation to ensure fair investigation and it had discharged that duty by transferring the cases to CBI.

6. Now, Robots Greet Passengers at Airport

The Chennai airport has two new staff to assist passengers. Named Mitra, the humanoid robots, were deputed on Wednesday to guide passengers inside the terminals. The two robots — one each at the departure and arrival halls of the domestic terminal — greeted passengers on Independence Day and interacted with them.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials said they would soon introduce the robots in the international terminal too after seeing the response from passengers. “These are on trial basis for now. They can walk around the terminal, wish passengers and talk to them. In a few days, we will programme them to assist passengers on various queries and guiding them to security checks and respective boarding gates,” an official said.

7. EB Utilities Come in the Way of Civic Work

The Greater Chennai Corporation will soon start removing transformers, cables and poles that pose a hindrance to stormwater drains, pedestrian movement and canal restoration.

Tangedco has given its nod for starting work at 55 locations across the city.

“Hindrance to pedestrian movement has been reported on many roads. Senior officials have conducted inspections in the localities. Work on stormwater drains is incomplete on 10 key stretches due to the presence of transformers,” said a Corporation official.
