Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Sadhvi Prachi was detained for a short while in Bisahara village in Dadri, where Mohammad Akhlaq was killed by a mob over rumours of him consuming beef.
Prachi was in Dadri to visit the family of Jay Prakash, one of the accused in Akhlaq’s death, who committed suicide on Tuesday.
The police stopped her outside the village.
Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code, prohibiting the gathering of people in an area, has been imposed in the region even as the prime minister is being briefed about the incident.
Meanwhile, BJP members have said that her visit was in personal capacity and has nothing to do with the party.
Prachi, an accused in the Muzzaffarnagar riots case, had earlier claimed “internal rivalry” as the cause for Akhlaq’s death.
