Diesel-run SUV’s and luxury cars are likely on their way out in Delhi, at least for three months, after a bench headed by the Chief Justice of India T S Thakur said it was “not fair for the rich to buy luxury cars and pollute Delhi”. Pollution in the national capital has reached dangerous levels, but some of the measures to tackle it, like the Delhi government’s ‘odd-even formula’, have already faced a lot of criticism for not being thought out well enough.
T S Thakur said on Tuesday that the latest drive to clean the environment should begin from the “rich and affluent” who can afford to contribute more towards the environment than the common man who may have just one car. The bench, also comprising Justices A K Sikri and R Banumathi, is set to pronounce the detailed order on Wednesday. Starting January 1, the bench said, registration of diesel vehicles with engine capacity of over 2000 cc shall be banned for an initial period of three months.Report in The Indian Express
