The Gujarat Police disrupted a proposed indefinite hunger strike by Patel community members on Monday in Ahmedabad. The community members were arrested for staging the hunger strike without any permission.
The protest was held to demand the release of incarcerated quota agitation leader Hardik Patel and withdrawal of sedition charges against him and others.
Police Inspector VB Patel said that 37 members of the community, including the leaders Sardar Patel Group (SPG) and Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), were arrested for demonstrating in front of Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad.
Leaders of PAAS earlier handed over a memorandum to District Collectors and other government officials at taluka level in various parts of the state. They also said that if their leaders are not released, they will start a stir from Monday.
