On Monday morning her flight landed in New Delhi’s international airport. Dressed in a red and white salwar kameez, Geeta was welcomed by Indian and Pakistani officials. Janardhan Mahato’s family, who claim to be her kin, were also present at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Earlier this month, Geeta had identified her family from a picture sent to her by the Indian High Commission.

More than ten years ago, a deaf-mute Indian national Geeta accidentally crossed over to Pakistan. She has lived in Pakistan all these years and was taken care of by the Edhi foundation.

Geeta will now be taken to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. The ministry will hand Geeta over to her family if the DNA test results are positive. Till then, Geeta will be kept at an undisclosed location.

Geeta’s story had come to light after Salman Khan starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan, based on a similar concept, went on to become a blockbuster. Actor Salman and director Kabir Khan advocated Geeta’s homecoming on multiple occasions.
