A Sri Lankan court sentenced four former soldiers to 25 years in jail each for the gang rape of a 27-year-old woman in June 2010.
The High Court in Jaffna, the capital of the northern province, also ordered each soldier to pay 25,000 Sri Lankan Rupees each to the victim as compensation. They were also ordered to pay 100,000 rupees to a neighbour who was sexually abused by the men.
Prosecutions on sex crimes by security personnels are rarely carried out in the country. However, this case “brought the military into disrepute” judge Manickavasagar Illancheliyan was quoted as saying.
