Delhi Transport Minister Gopal Rai submitted his resignation on Tuesday, citing health reasons. His portfolio has been taken over by Satyendra Jain, who was the Health and PWD Minister in the AAP government.
Last week, Rai had requested Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to relieve him of the responsibility of Transport Department on health grounds as he had recently undergone a major surgery.
Jain currently holds key portfolios: PWD, Health, Power and Home. The departments Rai continues to hold include Labour, Irrigation and Flood Control, General Administration Department (GAD), Development and Employment.
Jain had temporarily taken care of the transport department for about 20 days when Rai had undergone a surgery to remove a bullet from his neck and then physiotherapy treatment in Hyderabad.
He has been undergoing physiotherapy, which is expected to last three months, at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre.
Last month, he had announced Premium Bus Service Scheme to encourage the car users to leave their vehicles and use public transport.
However, the scheme came under scanner of Delhi Government’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) as Lt Governor Najeeb Jung had refused to give his approval to the scheme.
Rai had said on Monday that he was prepared to go to jail if charges of corruption in an app-based premium bus service scheme were proved. He was to go to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday.
