Even as investigations against Vijay Mallya continue, the “broke” liquor baron who owes a consortium of 17 banks over Rs. 7000 crores in dues, has bought an apartment in New York’s trump towers for $10 million.
As per reports, Mallya paid a token sum of $ 4.6 million in 2010, for a penthouse that in his daughter, Tanya’s name. The outstanding amount was paid by him around the same time, the ED tightened the noose in Mallya’s loan default case.
Facing a non-bailable arrest warrant against him, Mallya offered to pay Rs 4,400 crore. Later he provided an additional offer of Rs 2,468 higher than the original amount.
The Ministry of External Affairs has suspended his passport and is consulting legal experts to explore the option of deportation of Vijay Mallya.
