Police in Saudi Arabia have arrested a YouTuber named Abu Sin for engaging in “unethical behaviour” with a Californian blogger named Christina, reported The Independent.
According to them, the videos that were originally broadcasted on YouNow attracted “negative attention” from the community.
Abu Sin loosely translates to “toothless” which is what a marking feature of the YouTuber is. The videos broadcast between the two of them are goofy, where they are trying to communicate with each other given the language barrier.
The two jokingly declared their love for one another which could have been construed as objectionable, given the conservative nature of the society.
Police managed to abduct Sin when he was in the middle of a livestream and the video of his arrest was seen by many. He faces up to three years in jail for this “crime”.
Colonel Fawaz Al-Mayman, a spokesperson for Riyadh Police spoke about the arrest.
His videos received many comments and many of the commenters of the general public demanded that he should be punished for his actions.
While there is no written penal code, there have been several laws passed on the issue of internet usage and the videos are also in conflict with the country’s interpretation of the Sharia Law.
As unfortunate as the incident is, one can only hope the YouTuber is not jailed for making harmless videos.
