A young woman in Saudi Arabia is being threatened with execution after she was photographed without a hijab.

Identified as Malak Al Shehri, the woman is receiving a lot of social media flak after she posted a picture of herself without a veil or abaya in the capital city of Riyadh. The account from which she uploaded the picture has been deleted now.

The picture went viral and reached a number of extremists who demanded her execution. Some even demanded that she be murdered and that her corpse be thrown to the dogs for her ‘transgression’.

A hashtag which translates in English as “we demand the imprisonment of the rebel Angel Al Shehri” subsequently went viral.

Some users called for ‘bloodshed’ whereas others asked for strict punishment.

However, amidst all the hatred the woman also managed to garner some support.

All women in Saudi Arabia are required to wear an abaya, a traditional full body covering. In addition to this, they must also wear a headscarf or hijab.
