In one glorious sweep, the Supreme Court of India decriminalised same-sex sexual acts between consenting adults, by reading down Section 377. The verdict is being celebrated by LGBTQ+ communities and their supporters across the country.

Amidst the joy, guess what our TV screens had in store for us? Debates. Debates on whether homosexuality should be legalised or not.

Yes, while the country rejoiced in rainbow colours and celebrated the historic step towards progress and equality, news channels were on their usual hunt for TRPs, through loudmouthed yet pointless debates.

What do we do about the Indian news channels’ insufferable love for ‘debating’ just about anything, even human rights? asked several people on social media.

A few netizens also corrected some of the misleading information that was being broadcasted about the judgement.

Netizens further called out the channels’ invitation to openly homophobic ‘bigots’ to represent a counter viewpoint and give shape to the ‘debate’.

Having said that, there were several who also gave the TV channels and their debate curators the benefit of the doubt in the light of Freedom of Speech.
