‘Dear Girl From Pakistan’
India and Pakistan have had a strenuous relationship since Partition. But Delhi-based slam poet Shivani Gupta used her words to explain that at the end of the day, we’re all just human.
“Look I’m not here to start a fight, I’m just here to say ‘Hi, how are you?’”
Shivani spoke in an engaging tone to a nameless girl from Pakistan, to set aside all differences, asking her simple questions.
- “Are you anything like me?”
- “Do you think we’re enemies?”
- “Do you listen to songs and wish they were the soundtrack of your life too?”
- “And your favourite movie be your story?”
- “Do you ever think about what it would be like to just cross over and come over to my side?”
- “What does the world look like from your eyes?”
- “Did you also play ‘I spy’ as a child? What did you see?”
Shivani apologises for taking so long to say something. She says, “sorry that all I have to give you is an apology and not even a real conversation.”
Watch Shivani’s poem. We are hopeful it will move you.
Dear girl from Pakistan, I know it has taken me 69 long years but I hope it is not too late for me to say, Forget about what’s in the news, Tell me, how was your day?
‘Dear Girl From India’
In response to Shivani’s powerful poem, a young girl from Pakistan responded with her own video, answering some questions and agreeing with what Shivani emoted through her words.
Hearts are never separated by borders, come let’s create a vision much broader.
You don’t need to apologise for sins not yours.
I’m sorry you know me through mere words, come I will show you we’re of the same herd.
