In many ways, life’s a joyride when you’re single but come Valentine’s month things could quickly get somewhat blah. But don’t worry, it’ll be okay.
Remember, you’re not alone. There are many who feel the same way and are trying to get through the month without getting too lovesick. This day too shall pass. But only after you pass through these nine emotional stages.
So fasten your seatbelt. This could be an emotional rollercoaster ride and a bumpy one at that.
Stage 1: February 14th. What’s That?
You’re happy living in your own little cocoon until the most dreaded day slowly crawls up on you. You might try to swat it away, but not for long.
Stage 2: V-Day Blues
Love is all around you. Literally! The Valentine fever has gripped everyone and is everywhere from bookstores to coffee shops. A week before D-Day all you see are hearts, roses, chocolates and balloons. Which makes you wonder why we fight if there is so much lurrrvvve around. Eeks!
Stage 3: The Denial
The mantra you’ll often hear singles chanting is that Valentine’s Day is a day for LOSERS. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) are your BFFs and for two weeks you’re in tune with all anti-Valentine’s propaganda. It’s that time of the year when you turn all sanskari.
Stage 4: Questioning Oneself
Why doesn’t anybody like me? What’s wrong with me? Am I not fun or pretty to be someone’s Valentine’s date? Maybe it’s my weight or my nose? Almost everyone’s had these thoughts at some stage.
Stage 5: You Gotta Have Faith
‘Umeed pe duniya kayam hai’ is your favourite hymn. You wish for a secrete admirer, who’ll probably surprise you with flowers and chocolates on 14 February and make you go ‘aww you shouldn’t have’.
Stage 6: Self-Reliant
I love me, myself. You’re not selfish but self-reliant. You don’t need another person to make you feel special on some stupid day. Pamper yourself with exotic flowers, scrumptious meals and expensive chocolates.
So, in your face Valentine’s Day. Yeah!
Stage 7: Cheers to Singlehood
The eve of Valentine’s Day brings together all the singles at a pub with a lone agenda to toast their single status and dance and sing the night away.
Stage 8: Stalker Alert!
Guess who visits you after a drunken night with pals – the ‘stalking’ streak in you. The stalker in you urges you to follow your friends’ every V-day move and social media posts. Mock their silly hashtags – #TrueLove, #ILoveYou, #AwesomeNightWithBae and come up with your own hashtags #SinglehoodRocks, #SingleLadies #LetsBeReal .
Stage 9: The Day
Lucky for you, this year V-day falls on a Sunday. So by the time you wake up and finish your mundane work half of your day will be over and so will Valentine’s Day.
Phew! Congratulations you’ve lived through another Valentine’s Day. And nothing could dampen your spirits. Almost!
