Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan came together to support filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Hollywood debut Broken Horses. While introducing the trailer of his film at an event on Tuesday, Vinod Chopra revealed that the film is inspired from his own critically acclaimed Hindi film, Parinda (1989), starring Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit.

Vinod Chopra said, “Broken Horses is not close to Parinda. It begins with it. Abhijat and I were traveling from Boston and New York as Eklavya - The Royal Guard was being screened in Boston. We had seen a film The Departed that Martin Scorsese had remade and we were talking to each other when I went to get beer. When I came back Abhijat said to me, ‘Let’s do Parinda.’ It started like that but while we made it, the film has become very different.”

Actors Chris Marquette and Anton Yelchin play the brothers in Broken Horses, recreating the intensity that Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor brought to the screen earlier in Chopra’s slickly told tale of conflict between love and loyalty. While Parinda was set in Mumbai’s underworld, Broken Horses is set against the drug war in the American-Mexican border.

Vinod Chopra wants Broken Horses “to have its own identity and retain its purity” and has decided to let the title and the language of the film stay in English even for the Indian release. Explaining the meaning of the title he said, “When one tames a wild horse it is said we have broken that horse.” But Chopra’s biggest coup has been getting his film endorsed by none other than the likes of Avatar director James Cameron and Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron. And Vinod Chopra has liberally used their quotes both in the film’s trailer and poster to push his maiden Hollywood venture.

When asked about the chances of an Oscar nomination for Broken Horses, Chopra said, “Next year it will be valid. If it is good enough then it will go, if not then it won’t.”
