The highly anticipated Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma starrer Sultan looks like it’s going to be one of the highest grossing films this year. No wonder the makers of other Bollywood flicks are vying to piggy back on producer Aditya Chopra’s upcoming wrestler drama. But the Yash Raj Films (YRF) head honcho
has never entertained such requests, always preferring to tie YRF films to trailers of other films being produced under his own banner. But this year, he might not have any say in the matter.
According to a DNA report, the co-producers of the upcoming Akshay Kumar starrer Rustom are pushing theatre chain PVR to allow the Rustom trailer to ride on the mega release of Sultan as it opens on 6 July.
The co-producers of Rustom — Essel Vision, Cape of Good Films and KriArj Entertainment — are putting all their clout behind this deal. Sultan is expected to get a humongous opening and that would mean more eyeballs for their trailer. It’s a fab marketing idea.A source (as reported by DNA)
While Rustom might not be able to take advantage of Sultan’s big opening across other theatre chains, it seems PVR is likely to take an independent marketing decision, that Aditya Chopra might not be happy about, but wouldn’t have much say in.
Rustom tells the real-life story of naval officer K.M. Nanavati played by Akshay Kumar and is due for release on 12 August.
Akshay is currently on holiday and won’t return before 6 July (when Sultan releases), so three versions of the trailer had been sent to him for approval last week. One trailer will release on 30 June 30, while the theatrical one will be among the other two. But as it’s purely a marketing call taken by the theatre chain, there’s nothing much they can do about it.A source told DNA
