David and Varun Dhawan’s attempt to recreate the magic of the 1997 hit Judwaa seems to have paid off. The father-son jodi’s Judwaa 2 may not have got great reviews, but the box-office is cheering for them.

According to reports, the comedy has collected Rs 16.10 crore on day one in India, making it the fourth biggest Bollywood opener this year. Films like Baahubali 2, Tubelight and Raees had bigger openings but both the Salman and the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer later ran out of steam at the box-office.

While in an earlier tweet Taran Adarsh had said that Judwaa 2 “pumps oxygen in the lungs of an ailing industry” and mentions that the film earned Rs 15.55 crore on Friday, he later corrected the figure to Rs 16.10 crore.

This also means that the Varun Dhawan-starrer had a bigger opening than Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka’s Jab Harry Met Sejal directed by Imtiaz Ali, which comes as a big surprise for the trade. JHMS earned around Rs 15.25 crore on release.

The good news for the makers of Judwaa 2 is that the film enjoys an extended weekend at the box-office in India with Saturday being Dussehra and Monday being Gandhi Jayanti. The Dhawans are definitely looking at a Rs 60 crore + weekend box-office collection here.
