Many senior politicians paid tribute to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 55th death anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi too tweeted:

The tweet caused quite a chatter on Twitter. Modi was shown love for being a “graceful statesman.”

During campaigning, Modi had taken many digs at Nehru and had been criticised for bringing up Nehru’s governance many times. One BJP leader had commented that Nehru is responsible for Partition.

Twitter users also pointed out this stark contrast.

Another Twitter user also joked that Modi paying tributes to Nehru is “so magnanimous of Modiji, considering Nehru did not let him work for 5 years.”

Writer Meena Kandasamy pointed out how PM Modi’s statement has no adjectives.

Another Twitter user said it is good that Nehru’s death anniversary did not occur during elections. “Else, Modi would have been blaming him rather than remembering his contributions to nation,” he wrote.

A parody account of Jawaharlal Nehru also retweeted Modi’s tribute to Nehru and said, “As if I will forget how you behave the rest of the time.”
