Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday, 28 April, said she is not aware of PM Modi’s caste, and that the Opposition is only raising issues related to development.

Speaking to reporters in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich, Priyanka Gandhi said:

“Even today, I do not know his (PM Modi’s) caste. The Opposition and the Congress leaders are only raising issues related to development. We have never made any personal remarks against him.”

In Amethi, earlier on Sunday, the Congress general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh East also questioned the BJP and PM Modi over the issue of nationalism.

“What type of nationalism is there in 'main hoon Modi' (I am Modi)? What is the meaning of nationalism?” Vadra asked. "It means patriotism and love for the country. Who is the country? It’s people and their love. If you have affinity only towards yourself, then what type of nationalism is this?”

Amethi is represented by Congress president and Priyanka’s brother. Rahul Gandhi.

“Arranging a crowd using the power of money and addressing them or sending a message to them is very easy,” Vadra said. But, the real thing is to resolve the problems of the people, she added.

"The ground reality is absolutely different. When you speak to the people, a different message emanates and I have never seen the prime minister or the BJP leaders accepting that message," the Congress leader was quoted by PTI as saying.

Priyanka accused Modi of not visiting even a single village in his Varanasi constituency and not asking anyone about their problems, reported PTI.

She described the policies of the BJP as "anti-people", "anti-youth" and "anti-farmers".

"The menace of stray animals is very much here and the farmers are forced to keep a watch on their crops during night. There are still some places where electricity supply is absent," Vadra added.

Meanwhile, Union Minister and Rahul Gandhi’s contestant from Amethi, Smriti Irani, on Sunday visited the fire-affected fields in Purab Dwara village in the constituency, meeting the affected locals.

Taking a dig at the Congress, Irani told the media:

“I am happy that Mrs Vadra is counting the number of times I came to Amethi. Probably she is counting because she is unable to tell the public where was the MP missing for 15 years.”
