Taking full responsibility for the BJP’s defeat in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, outgoing Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the party has tirelessly worked towards the welfare of the people in the state for 15 years, and that the new government should continue to do so.
“We have won 109 seats and we will be responsible in the role of Opposition. We would provide constructive criticism,” Chouhan added.
After hours of a neck-and-neck competition, the Congress party won 114 seats, while the BJP clinched 109 seats in the state. However, Chouhan had made it clear earlier on Wednesday, 12 December, that his party will not stake claim to form the government.
Reiterating his stand, Chouhan said:
“We devised schemes for people, for farmers, for the poor. And being a part of the democratic set-up, I want the new government to take over from here.”Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Outgoing CM, MP
Speaking about Rahul Gandhi’s poll promise on writing off farm loan within 10-days of forming the government, Chouhan said, “I hope Rahul Gandhi delivers what he had promised.”
The Congress party fell short of the halfway mark but staked claim with the support of 121 MLAs. However, the Grand Old Party is yet to decide the chief minister for the state.
