Giving birth to a child is a miracle in its own way, but the story of Mayissa, a pregnant woman who just gave birth to her child after being caught in an airstrike in Syria is inspiring and beautiful: the miracle of birth in the desolation of death.

Just when Mayissa was on her way to the hospital, an airstrike hit Aleppo, Syria and she suffered a massive injury to her belly. An inch-long shrapnel was embedded in her belly and her arm and leg were broken.

As she reached the hospital the doctors were worried about her faint pulse and her baby, but they did not give up. Determined despite drastic conditions, the doctors managed to save them both.

Because of her injuries, the doctors had to perform an emergency caesarian. Still, the fight did not end there.

The child was born silent and white as a tile.

Although his heart wasn’t beating, the doctors continued to fight.

They pumped his chest, hoping to start the minutes-old heart. They cleared his airways and did their best to revive the baby. And with immense effort, they succeeded.

The baby’s heart began to beat and colour blossomed in his skin. The little child then cried for the first time.
