Thousands of boating enthusiasts gathered in Venice on Sunday afternoon to watch the Regata Storica, a historical boat race held every year since the thirteenth century in the city’s Grand Canal.

The Regata draws interest from thousands of tourists as well as local supporters.

The historical parade is the most highly-anticipated event of the year and was greeted with enthusiasm by the crowds, including many young people.

After the parade, there are four different races — the first three being the Pupparini (two young rowers), the Mascarete (a crew of two women) and the Caorline (a crew of six men). The last category is the most famous — the “Campioni su Gondolini” (Champions on Little Gondolas).

The winning crew is awarded the Regata Red Pennant — a prize every Venetian rower dreams of.
