Eager to come out of the lingering shadows of the Vietnam War, US President Barack Obama lifted the embargo on selling arms to Vietnam on Monday. Obama made the case for a more trusting and prosperous relationship the former foe.

Tracing the arc of the US-Vietnam relationship through cooperation, conflict, “painful separation” and a long reconciliation, Obama applauded the transformation in the relations between the two countries considering where they stood during the cold war.

The lifting of embargo is seen as America’s move to counter China in South-East Asia.
