The first woman to catch a barrel at one of the world’s biggest waves is carving a path for female surfers. Daring Paige Alms, 27, made history this year by riding a wave called Peahi – nicknamed Jaws – in Hawaii, USA, which can swell to 60ft.

This video shows Paige turning into the tube of the wave as the monster break crashes down. She is one of only a handful of women brave enough to paddle out to Jaws and is often in a line-up of just men.
