After much speculation, the wait for those looking out for this year’s Nobel Prize series is almost over. On Tuesday, the much-coveted prize in Physics was accorded to David Thouless, Duncan Haldane and Michael Kosterlitz for their observations on rare forms of matter that could revolutionise the future of electronic devices. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences named the all-American trio for their "theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter."

Meanwhile, Japanese scientist Yoshinori Ohsumi bagged this year's Nobel Prize in Medicine for his study on cell behaviour. The 71-year-old used yeast to demonstrate how cells disintegrate to recycle themselves. His pathbreaking study has provided fresh insights into cell behaviour associated to ailments like Cancer.
