Hear the clink of those crystal glasses with the potent oaky liquid that we call whiskey?
Turns out that Indians’ choice of alcohol has been the good ol' whiskey or brandy. You may have swirled your glasses of reds and whites like a professional sommelier, sniffing and raising your brows but wine unfortunately takes a backseat.
With a population of over 1.3 billion, India consumes only an average 0.01 litres of wine per capita annually, according to a recently released wine price index.
India ranked in position 48 with an average cost of $19.22 or Rs 1,200 for a 750 ml bottle of wine, factoring in both local and imported wines. The price is definitely heavy on the average Indian pockets, which perhaps explains the reason for more whiskey loyalists.
Paraguay offers the least expensive wine at an average price of $7.50 (Rs 500) per bottle, while at the other end of the ranking is United Arab Emirates at a cost over five times higher, at $39.02 (Rs 2,600) per 750ml bottle.
