Ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections campaigning, actor Urmila Matondkar, who had joined Congress before the Lok Sabha polls, Krupashankar Singh, former president of Mumbai unit, and now former minister Harshvardhan Patil have bid adieu to the Congress.

In the past six months, many Congress leaders in Maharashtra have quit the party.

Why are new and old Congress leaders exiting the party?

It is said that the biggest reason behind these exits is Congress’ poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections.

While the motivation of the cadres and workers is low, the leaders are quitting the party, fearing the repeat of 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Another reason behind the chaos in the party is actress-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar.

After the loss in the general elections, Matondkar wrote a letter to former Maharashtra chief Milind Deora, urging action against the workers and the cadres who did not work in the election campaigning.

When no action was taken, Matondkar allegedly quit the party. The Quint has not verified how much truth this information holds, but her departure has created a stir, highlighting the infighting within the Congress.

Krupashankar Singh’s Resignation Over Article 370 Abrogation

Former President of Mumbai unit Krupashankar Singh has resigned from the party citing Congress’ opposition to the abrogation of Article 370. However, the truth is that many party leaders have had conflicts with Singh in the past one year. The matter was even taken up to the then Congress President Rahul Gandhi but no solution was proposed.

It is evident that the party leadership has not been successful in dealing with the issues of cadres and other leaders in Maharashtra.

From top to bottom, there is a huge question mark on the leadership of the party.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has now taken control of the reins as interim president of the party, but is it too late?
