A train derailed in southwestern Illinois on 10 September, sparking a huge fire that sent plumes of black smoke billowing into the air that could be seen in downtown St Louis, and prompting the evacuation of nearby schools and residences.

The St Clair County Emergency Management Agency reported the accident about 12:30 pm. The video showed more than 10 train cars derailed with flames shooting from the wreckage.

By about 3 p.m., officials said the fire had been extinguished and the people who were evacuated had been allowed to return to their homes.

St Clair County Emergency Management Director Herb Simmons said there were no injuries reported. An investigation into the derailment is underway.
