The government on Thursday announced a Rs 2.50 per litre cut on petrol and diesel prices, factoring in excise duty reduction of Rs 1.50 per litre, and asking oil companies to absorb another Re 1.

Meanwhile, BJP-ruled states – including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura, Goa, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan – announced a cut in VAT of up to Rs 2.5 per litre to effect a Rs 5 per litre reduction in pump rates.

Here’s how Indians are reacting to the government's move to slash fuel prices:

“Fuel prices should come down further. Fuel should get cheaper. This is a very meagre fall in price.”
Md Hussain Khan, Resident, Delhi

“What will Rs 2.50 do? There will hardly be any relief in Rs 2.50. At least there should be a relief of Rs 10. The government is only thinking about itself and not about the public.”
Pranil, Resident, Mumbai

Some people opined that further fall in fuel prices would be better for the public, after the recent hikes in the price:

“All of a sudden there is a price rise by Rs 2.50, Rs 3 or Rs 5. But when the prices fall, it is only by a rupee or fifty paise or thirty paise. There is some relief, but it would have been good if prices could further come down by another Rs 2.50.”
Sameer, Resident, Raipur

In Delhi, where the fuel prices are the lowest among all metros and most state capital, petrol is sold at Rs 84 per litre and diesel at Rs 75.45.

“Fuel prices will even reach Rs 100 in a few days. Inflation is too high these days. I can’t even see ‘achhe din’. Let’s see what happens in 2019.”
Md Hussain Khan, Resident, Delhi

The price cuts would be effective from midnight today.
