The Indian women’s hockey team beat China 5-4 in a thrilling penalty shootout to win the 2017 Asia Cup in Japan on Sunday. Winning the tournament after 13 years, India secured its qualification for next year’s World Cup.
Navjot Kaur gave India the lead in the 25th minute while China found a late equaliser through Tiantian Luo, who converted a penalty corner in the 47th minute. After scores were level at 1-1 after full time, the game went into shootout.
Scores were once again tied at 4-4 after the best-of-five round and the game went into sudden death. After captain Rani Rampal scored for India, goalkeeper Savita made a stunning save to hand India the win.
