Heavy rains over the past two days caused the Imphal river to overflow, flooding areas of the Manipur capital on Wednesday.

The rainfall was a result of Cyclone Mora, after wreaking havoc on the Bangladesh coast, travelling inland towards the northeastern states.

We got a cyclone warning in the newspaper this morning. The river was flooded due to the cyclone. It surprises us all that the river has flooded like this. The water level is continuously rising. If the rain continues, we are likely to face a worse situation.

Citizens though, found a temporary way of keeping the floodwaters in check. They have built raised embankments using sacks filled with rocks and mud, thus ensuring the roads stay safe.

A permanent solution might be required as the water level in the river is on a constant rise due to the incessant rainfall.
