The JNU Students’ Union election this year is like no other. The politics on campus has been coloured by the events of 9 February and its tumultuous aftermath.

While current JNUSU President, Kanhaiya Kumar’s party (All India Students Federation) is sitting this election out, the All India Students Association (AISA) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) have come together to form a Left alliance.

This is a move to keep the right-wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) – hitherto considered a fringe party – out of this year’s union.

The politics on campus this year seems to have boiled down to a battle of hashtags – #StandWithJNU vs #ShutDownJNU.

But with the ABVP posing enough of a threat to warrant the formation of an alliance, have they half-won the battle already?
