A day after the Indian Army carried out surgical strikes along the Line of Control with Pakistan, residents of villages close to the border in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir have been asked to move to safer places.

Pre-empting a possible flare-up on the border front , the Centre on Thursday asked the Punjab Government to clear all villages lying within a distance 10 kilometres from the border with Pakistan. Similarly, villagers residing along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir have been asked to move into inner parts of the state.

More than 1,000 villages in Punjab have been cleared, and at least four camps have been set up in Jammu and Kashmir. India shares a total border area of 2308 kms with Pakistan, out of which 533 kms lies in Punjab alone. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir shares a 210-kilometre border with Pakistan.
